Charlie Ramos ’02

Charlie Ramos ’02 currently serves as first vice president, wealth management at Morgan Stanley. While he has had an accomplished career in the financial services industry, his success was not always guaranteed. Ramos was a first-generation American and the youngest of four children. The ability to pay for college was a long-shot for him, but support from Saint Peter’s put his goal of obtaining a degree within reach. Ultimately, he was the first in his family to receive a college education.
Ramos explored some of the reasons why Saint Peter’s is such an important institution to him and why he is an advocate and donor of the University and why he has decided to service on the University’s Board of Regents.
How has Saint Peter’s University inspired you?
When I think of Saint Peter’s one adjective that continuously comes to mind is “caring.” From my time as a student at Saint Peter’s 20 years ago, to now, as a Regent who serves on the Academic Affairs Committee, it is clear how much everyone including faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and others care about Saint Peter’s students – academically, and experientially.
What inspired me to give back to Saint Peter’s was a combination of my gratitude for the ability to receive a world-class college education, to learn from passionate professors with actual experience in their specific fields and the hope to give others like me the ability to share my experiences. These experiences, among other factors, changed my life and my family’s lives meaningfully and I ultimately want to pay it forward.
Is there an individual in your life who influenced your generosity?
In hindsight, my mother taught my siblings and I that giving back, when you could, had the potential to help many others less fortunate than us. I recall her giving something during Sunday Mass, and small amounts here and there to different education and cancer related organizations. Giving back has always been a value that was implicitly taught in my household.
What contribution to Saint Peter’s are you most proud of?
I am working with Taina Cutler, executive director of the Center for Career Engagement and Experiential Learning (CEEL), and Mary Kate Naatus, KPMG dean of the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, on a program that brings students together with Morgan Stanley executives to discuss various career related topics. The topics include diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, confidence building and addressing impostor syndrome, as well as making decisions about your career path. I am proud to be a part of the development of this program and confident about its success.
What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
Some may be surprised that I am a novice beekeeper and have kept one honeybee hive for the past seven years in my backyard. Last year, I harvested about 80 pounds of honey and expect to be able to harvest over 100 pounds of honey this year.
What would you tell someone who is considering making a gift to Saint Peter’s?
Giving to Saint Peter’s will not only make a meaningful impact on students, but their families as well.
I am of the belief that a well-rounded education, which promotes students to challenge themselves, is paramount. Encouraging critical thinking, curiosity and the desire to learn with an open mind and open heart is essential. Saint Peter’s provides students with an exceptional learning experience and promotes upward mobility that impacts students, their families and future generations.
